Barbara Weiss

I am drawn to subtle, everyday
scenes that catch my eye;
the light playing off a table in a
cafe, or the color shift of leaves
as fall approaches. My paintings
express a personal response to
subtle changes and transitions
that I observe, sometimes
abstract, more often realistic.

Through the use of composition,
I like to zoom in on and isolate
the subject. I use cropping to
create a sense of narrative or
mystery.

Pastel is the primary medium
for my work. It is perfect for
expressing color and light and
combines the tactile feedback
of both painting and drawing.

"Self-Denial" is a series about
my struggle to quit smoking.
The nine realistic paintings are
brutally honest about the anger,
grief and self-loathing that
accompany withdrawal from an
addiction.
